I generally don’t write about news articles unless the news is a very interesting one. Take this article for an example: A 18-year-old teenage from Newyork filed a lawsuit against Apple worth 1 Billion dollar claiming that Apple’s flawed facial recognition technology led to his false arrest. According to an article published on NewYork Times, Ousmane Bah, an 18-years-old teenager from NewYork was arrested from his home in the NewYork in November last year in the connection of theft from Apple store in Boston. Ousmane Bah claims that the day the theft happened he was attending his senior prom in Manhattan.
According to him, he had lost a faceless learner’s permit which the thief might have found or stolen and later used that stolen ID to get access to an Apple store in Boston. Since the ID had no photo, the flawed facial recognition technology of the Apple store somehow linked the ID of that non-photo with the accused which led to the arrest of the teenager, he stated in the lawsuit. After the arrest and during the investigation, detectives found that the man in the CCTV footage didn’t look anything like the accused.
The thief ripped apple store in Boston worth $1,200 and along with two more Apple stores in Delaware and Manhattan. After the investigations, charges again Bah have been dropped in both Boston and Manhattan, but the case in New Jersey is still pending. Now Bah has filed a lawsuit against Apple and for its flawed facial recognition technology which led to an arrest of an innocent teenager. In the lawsuit, Bah said that “He was forced to respond to multiple false allegations which led to severe stress and hardship.”
Part of lawsuit reads that “[Apple’s] use of facial recognition software in its stores to track individuals suspected of theft is the type of Orwellian surveillance that consumers fear, particularly as it can be assumed that the majority of consumers are not aware that their faces are secretly being analyzed.”
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how apple answers to the lawsuit. What do you think? Should Apple pay the $1 Billion to the teenager? Is the lawsuit amount is justified? Let’s discuss in the comment section below.
